Rational Numbers: Decimals, Fractions and Word Problems – Grade 7 math worksheet answer key
Each solution shows the long division remainders or the running calculation, so you can find the exact step where an error began. Check signs first, then check the size of every answer against a quick estimate.
    Grade 7Common Core: 7.NS.A.2d · 7.NS.A.3

    Problem 1: Fractions to decimals

    1. \(3: 5=0.6\).
    2. \(70: 8=8\) r 6, \(60: 8=7\) r 4, \(40: 8=5\) r 0. So \(0.875\).
    3. \(90: 20=4\) r 10, \(100: 20=5\) r 0. So \(0.45\).

    (a) 0.6 (b) 0.875 (c) 0.45

Problem 2: Long division to decimals

    1. \(90: 25=3\) r 15, \(150: 25=6\) r 0. So \(0.36\).
    2. \(110: 16=6\) r 14, \(140: 16=8\) r 12, \(120: 16=7\) r 8, \(80: 16=5\) r 0. So \(0.6875\).
    3. \(130: 40=3\) r 10, \(100: 40=2\) r 20, \(200: 40=5\) r 0. So \(0.325\).

    (a) 0.36 (b) 0.6875 (c) 0.325

    Problem 3: Repeating decimals

    \(\frac{2}{3}\): \(20: 3=6\) r 2, and the remainder 2 returns, so \(0.\overline{6}\).

    \(\frac{5}{6}\): \(50: 6=8\) r 2, \(20: 6=3\) r 2, and the remainder 2 returns, so \(0.8\overline{3}\).

    0.83365.000−48remainder 220−18remainder 220−18remainder 2
The remainder 2 repeats, so \(\frac{5}{6}=0.8\overline{3}\).

    \(\frac{2}{3}=0.\overline{6}\) and \(\frac{5}{6}=0.8\overline{3}\)

    Problem 4: Repeating digits

    1. \(50: 9=5\) r 5, and the remainder 5 returns. So \(0.\overline{5}\).
    2. \(70: 12=5\) r 10, \(100: 12=8\) r 4, \(40: 12=3\) r 4, and the remainder 4 returns. So \(0.58\overline{3}\).
    3. \(40: 11=3\) r 7, \(70: 11=6\) r 4, and the remainder 4 returns, so the digits 36 repeat: \(0.\overline{36}\).
    70 / 125 r 10100 / 128 r 440 / 123 r 4
The remainder 4 repeats, so the digit 3 repeats in 7/12.

    (a) \(0.\overline{5}\) (b) \(0.58\overline{3}\) (c) \(0.\overline{36}\)

    Problem 5: Terminate or repeat

    1. \(70: 20=3\) r 10, \(100: 20=5\) r 0: \(0.35\), terminates.
    2. \(40: 9=4\) r 4, the remainder 4 returns: \(0.\overline{4}\), repeats.
    3. \(110: 12=9\) r 2, \(20: 12=1\) r 8, \(80: 12=6\) r 8: \(0.91\overline{6}\), repeats.
    4. \(90: 16=5\) r 10, \(100: 16=6\) r 4, \(40: 16=2\) r 8, \(80: 16=5\) r 0: \(0.5625\), terminates.
    FractionDecimalType7/200.35terminates4/90.444…repeats11/120.91666…repeats9/160.5625terminates
Denominators 20 and 16 use only the factors 2 and 5.

    (a) 0.35, terminates (b) \(0.\overline{4}\), repeats (c) \(0.91\overline{6}\), repeats (d) 0.5625, terminates

    Problem 6: Mixed numbers

    1. Convert the fraction part: \(30: 8=3\) r 6, \(60: 8=7\) r 4, \(40: 8=5\) r 0, so \(\frac{3}{8}=0.375\). Then \(2\frac{3}{8}=2.375\).
    2. \(50: 6=8\) r 2, \(20: 6=3\) r 2, so \(\frac{5}{6}=0.8\overline{3}\). Then \(3\frac{5}{6}=3.8\overline{3}\), and the sign gives \(-3.8\overline{3}\).
    3. \(70: 20=3\) r 10, \(100: 20=5\) r 0, so \(\frac{7}{20}=0.35\). Then \(1\frac{7}{20}=1.35\).

    (a) 2.375 (b) \(-3.8\overline{3}\) (c) 1.35

    Problem 7: Negative fractions

    1. \(70: 11=6\) r 4, \(40: 11=3\) r 7, \(70: 11=6\) r 4, so the digits 63 repeat: \(\frac{7}{11}=0.\overline{63}\). Keep the sign: \(-0.\overline{63}\).
    2. \(\frac{13}{8}=1\) r 5, then \(50: 8=6\) r 2, \(20: 8=2\) r 4, \(40: 8=5\) r 0: \(1.625\). So \(-1.625\).

    (a) \(-0.\overline{63}\) (b) \(-1.625\)

Problem 8: Add and subtract decimals

    1. Different signs: \(9.75-6.4=3.35\), and 9.75 has the larger absolute value, so \(3.35\).
    2. Subtracting a negative is adding: \(2.8+4.15=6.95\).
    3. Both are moves to the left: \(-(7.25+3.6)=-10.85\).
    4. \(-0.75+1.5=0.75\).

    (a) 3.35 (b) 6.95 (c) \(-10.85\) (d) 0.75

Negatives: \(-0.35\) is less than \(-0.333\), which is less than \(-0.3\). Positives: \(0.2\) is less than \(0.25\).

    \(-0.35,\ -\frac{1}{3},\ -0.3,\ 0.2,\ \frac{1}{4}\)

    Problem 11: Four operations

    1. Different signs: \(3.5-2.25=1.25\), sign of the larger absolute value (negative): \(-1.25\).
    2. \(\frac{3}{4}+\frac{1}{2}=\frac{3}{4}+\frac{2}{4}=\frac{5}{4}\).
    3. \(-\frac{2\times 9}{3\times 10}=-\frac{18}{30}=-\frac{3}{5}\).
    4. \(\frac{5}{6}\times \frac{12}{5}=\frac{60}{30}=2\); same signs give a positive result.
