Understanding Fractions – Grade 3 math test answer key

This grade 3 fractions test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 10 test questions on understanding fractions.

This answer key shows the full solution and the scoring for each question of the Grade 3 fractions test. The total is 20 points. Use the scoring notes to give partial credit when a student shows part of the work.

    Grade 3Common Core: 3.NF.A.1 · 3.NF.A.2

Grade 3 Fractions Test Answer Key: questions 1–5

Question 1: Shaded parts (2 points)

    1. The bar has 6 equal parts and 5 are shaded: \(\frac{5}{6}\).
    2. \(6 – 5 = 1\) part is not shaded: \(\frac{1}{6}\).

Scoring: 1 point for each correct fraction. Reversing the numerator and denominator earns no point.

Question 2: Equal parts (2 points)

    1. Shape A is cut into fourths.
    2. Shape B has 4 parts, but the parts are not all the same size. Fourths must be equal parts.

Scoring: 1 point for Shape A. 1 point for explaining that the parts of Shape B are not equal.

Question 3: Numerator and denominator (2 points)

    1. The numerator, 5, tells that 5 parts are counted.
    2. The denominator, 8, tells that the whole is cut into 8 equal parts.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct meaning. Saying only “top number” or “bottom number” earns no point.

Question 4: Unit fractions (2 points)

    1. \(\frac{1}{3}\)
    2. The numerator is 7, so 7 parts.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.

Question 5: Point on a number line (2 points)

The space from 0 to 1 has 6 equal parts.

    1. P is 5 parts from 0: \(\frac{5}{6}\).
    2. Each part is \(\frac{1}{6}\).

Scoring: 1 point for each correct fraction.

Grade 3 Fractions Test Answer Key: questions 6–10

Question 6: Plot two fractions (2 points)

    Each part is \(\frac{1}{8}\). M is 3 steps from 0 and N is 7 steps from 0.

    01MN
    M is 3 steps and N is 7 steps from 0.

Scoring: 1 point for each correctly placed and labeled point.

Question 7: Shade the rectangle (2 points)

The rectangle has 8 equal parts.

    1. Shade any 5 of the 8 parts (see the figure).
    2. \(8 – 5 = 3\) parts are not shaded: \(\frac{3}{8}\).
Five of the eight equal parts are shaded.

Scoring: 1 point for shading exactly 5 of the 8 parts. 1 point for the fraction not shaded.

Question 8: Pie slices (2 points)

    1. \(3 + 2 = 5\) slices are eaten: \(\frac{5}{8}\).
    2. \(8 – 5 = 3\) slices are left: \(\frac{3}{8}\).

Scoring: 1 point for each correct fraction.

Question 9: Walking the trail (2 points)

Each part of the trail is \(\frac{1}{4}\) mile.

    1. Jamal walks 3 parts: \(\frac{3}{4}\) mile.
    2. \(4 – 3 = 1\) part is left: 1 part.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.

    Question 10: Ethan's claim (2 points)

    1. No. The denominator is 4, so each part is not one third.
    2. \(\frac{3}{4}\) means 3 parts, and each part has size \(\frac{1}{4}\).

Scoring: 1 point for saying he is not correct. 1 point for a sentence that names 3 parts of size \(\frac{1}{4}\).
