This grade 3 time test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 9 test questions on time, liquid volume and mass.
Use this key to score the test. Each answer shows one correct way to solve the problem, and the scoring note tells how the points are given. Other correct methods, such as a different set of jumps on a number line, earn full credit.
Grade 3 Time Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Two clocks (2 points)
- The minute hand is 3 marks past the 12 and the hour hand is just past the 4: 4:08.
- The minute hand is on the 8 and 3 marks past: \(40 + 3 = 43\). The hour hand is almost at the 12, so the hour is 11: 11:43.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct time. Give no point if the hour and minutes are swapped or the hour is wrong.
Question 2: Science class (2 points)
Jump from 9:25 to 9:45: 20 minutes. Jump from 9:45 to 10:05: 20 minutes. \(20 + 20 = 40\).
The class is 40 minutes long.
Scoring: 1 point for a correct method (jumps or subtraction across the hour), 1 point for 40 minutes.
Question 3: Class ends (2 points)
From 8:50 jump 10 minutes to 9:00. \(45 – 10 = 35\), so jump 35 more minutes to 9:35. Band practice ends at 9:35.
Scoring: 1 point for a correct method, 1 point for 9:35.
Question 4: Soccer start (2 points)
Jump back 20 minutes from 3:20 to 3:00. \(35 – 20 = 15\), so jump back 15 more minutes to 2:45. Practice started at 2:45.
Scoring: 1 point for counting back correctly, 1 point for 2:45.
Question 5: Grocery scale (2 points)
- The needle is 6 marks past 400: \(400 + 60 = 460\). The mass is 460 grams.
- \(460 – 385 = 75\). The oranges have 75 more grams.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct part. Part (b) needs the unit or the words “75 grams”.
Grade 3 Time Test Answer Key: questions 6–9
Question 6: Juice beakers (3 points)
- The juice stops at the 14 mark. 14 liters.
- \(14 – 9 = 5\). 5 more liters.
- \(14 + 4 = 18\). 18 liters.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct part.
Question 7: Heavy loads (3 points)
- \(8 \times 6 = 48\). 48 kilograms.
- \(63 : 7 = 9\). 9 kilograms.
- A loaf of bread is light but not tiny: grams (about 500 grams).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct part. Accept an answer of “grams” only; “kilograms” earns no point.
Question 8: Punch bowl (2 points)
Liters poured in: \(9 + 8 = 17\). Room left: \(24 – 17 = 7\). The bowl will hold 7 more liters.
Scoring: 1 point for finding 17 liters (or subtracting 9 and then 8), 1 point for 7 liters.
Question 9: Art project (2 points)
Start at 2:15. After 25 minutes it is 2:40. After the 10 minute break it is 2:50. After 20 more minutes it is 3:10.
Mei finishes at 3:10.
Scoring: 1 point for a correct plan with all three amounts, 1 point for 3:10.
