This grade 3 equivalent test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 10 test questions on equivalent and comparing fractions.
This answer key shows the full solution and the scoring for each question of the Grade 3 equivalent fractions test. The total is 20 points. Use the scoring notes to give partial credit when a student shows part of the work.
Grade 3 Equivalent Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Equal bars (2 points)
- Bar A: \(\frac{2}{3}\). Bar B: \(\frac{4}{6}\).
- \(\frac{2}{3} = \frac{4}{6}\), because the shaded parts have the same length.
Scoring: 1 point for both fractions correct. 1 point for a correct equation with the equals sign.
Question 2: Missing numbers (2 points)
- \(\frac{1}{2} = \frac{4}{8}\), so the missing number is 4.
- \(\frac{2}{3} = \frac{4}{6}\), so the missing number is 6.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct number.
Question 3: Same point (2 points)
- P is 1 part from 0 on the line cut into 4 parts: \(\frac{1}{4}\).
- On the bottom line P is 2 parts from 0 out of 8: \(\frac{2}{8}\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct fraction.
Question 4: Whole numbers (2 points)
- \(\frac{5}{1}\)
- 1, because all 8 of 8 equal parts make one whole.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.
Question 5: Equal to 1 or 2 (2 points)
- A fraction equals 1 when the numerator and denominator are equal: \(\frac{4}{4}\) and \(\frac{8}{8}\). (The fraction \(\frac{4}{2}\) equals 2.)
- Two wholes are 2 groups of 4 fourths, which is 8 fourths: \(2 = \frac{8}{4}\).
Scoring: 1 point for circling exactly the two correct fractions. 1 point for the correct fraction.
Grade 3 Equivalent Test Answer Key: questions 6–10
Question 6: Same denominator (2 points)
- \(\frac{3}{6} < \frac{5}{6}\)
- \(\frac{7}{8} > \frac{4}{8}\)
The denominators match, so the fraction with the larger numerator is greater.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct comparison symbol.
Question 7: Same numerator (2 points)
- \(\frac{2}{6} < \frac{2}{3}\)
- Both fractions count 2 parts, but the parts of the 2/3 bar are bigger. Thirds are bigger than sixths.
Scoring: 1 point for the correct symbol. 1 point for explaining that the parts, or the shaded length, are bigger in the thirds bar.
Question 8: Order three fractions (2 points)
\(\frac{3}{8} < \frac{3}{6} < \frac{3}{4}\)
All three fractions count 3 parts. The larger the denominator, the smaller each part, so eighths are smallest and fourths are biggest.
Scoring: 1 point for the correct order. 1 point for an explanation about the sizes of the parts.
Question 9: Sandwich share (2 points)
- \(\frac{3}{4} = \frac{6}{8}\)
- Neither. They eat the same amount.
Scoring: 1 point for the equation. 1 point for saying they eat the same amount.
Question 10: Different pizzas (2 points)
- No. Jamal ate more pizza.
- The pizzas are different sizes, so the wholes are different. Half of a large pizza is more than half of a small pizza.
Scoring: 1 point for answering no. 1 point for explaining that the wholes are different sizes.
