This grade 4 place test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 9 test questions on place value to one million.
This answer key gives the worked solution and the point-by-point scoring for the place value test. Add the points for all nine questions to get a score out of 20. A score of 16 or more shows strong understanding of place value and comparing numbers.
Grade 4 Place Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Value of a digit (2 points)
- The 7 is in the hundred thousands place: 700,000.
- The 4 is in the ten thousands place: 40,000.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct value. Give no credit for 7 or 4 alone.
Question 2: Ten times as much (2 points)
- \(2 \times 10 = 20\) and \(200 \times 10 = 2{,}000\). The missing numbers are 20 and 2,000.
- The 5 in the thousands place is worth 5,000. The 5 in the hundreds place is worth 500. \(500 \times 10 = 5{,}000\), so it is 10 times as much.
Scoring: 1 point for both missing numbers (give no credit if only one is right). 1 point for the answer 10 times .
Question 3: Names and numerals (2 points)
- seventy thousand four hundred eight
- 312,605
Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer. Accept a comma after thousand in part (a).
Question 4: Expanded form (2 points)
- \(50{,}000 + 6{,}000 + 30\). The ones and hundreds places hold 0, so they are left out.
- 2 hundred thousands, 0 ten thousands, 9 thousands, 0 hundreds, 4 tens, 7 ones: 209,047.
Scoring: 1 point each. In part (a), do not accept 5,000 + 600 + 30.
Question 5: Compare numbers (2 points)
- The first difference is in the tens place: 0 is less than 2. \(38{,}502 < 38{,}520\)
- 410,006 has six digits and 99,999 has five. \(410{,}006 > 99{,}999\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct symbol.
Grade 4 Place Test Answer Key: questions 6–9
Question 6: Order four numbers (2 points)
6,345 has four digits, so it is least. The others share 63 on the left. Their hundreds digits are 4, 0, 4 (63,450; 63,054; 63,405), so 63,054 is next. Then compare the tens of 63,450 and 63,405: 5 is greater than 0.
6,345; 63,054; 63,405; 63,450
Scoring: 2 points for the correct order. 1 point if exactly one pair of neighbors is swapped.
Question 7: Place-value disks (3 points)
- 40,739
- forty thousand seven hundred thirty-nine
- \(40{,}000 + 700 + 30 + 9\)
Scoring: 1 point for each part. In part (c), the 0 thousands place must not be written as a term.
Question 8: Explain the sixes (3 points)
- The 6s are worth 60,000; 6,000; and 60.
- \(6{,}000 \times 10 = 60{,}000\), so it is 10 times as much.
- Gabe is not correct. The first different place is the hundreds place: 0 in 66,060 and 6 in 66,600. So \(66{,}060 < 66{,}600\).
Scoring: 1 point for all three values; 1 point for 10 times ; 1 point for saying not correct with the hundreds-place reason.
Question 9: Sofia's number (2 points)
- \(700{,}000 + 30{,}000 + 500 + 2 = \)730,502
- The first three digits match. In the hundreds place, 5 is greater than 2. \(730{,}502 > 730{,}250\)
Scoring: 1 point each. In part (b), accept the comparison for the student’s own numeral if it is written correctly.
