Grade 4 Adding Worksheet Answer Key: problems 1–5

Problem 1: Unit fractions in a bar

Each shaded part is \(\frac{1}{6}\), and there are 4 of them.

    Answer: \(\frac{4}{6}=\frac{1}{6}+\frac{1}{6}+\frac{1}{6}+\frac{1}{6}\)

Problem 2: Three ways to split seven eighths

Split the 7 eighths into two groups. Possible answers:

    1. \(\frac{7}{8}=\frac{1}{8}+\frac{6}{8}\)
    2. \(\frac{7}{8}=\frac{2}{8}+\frac{5}{8}\)
    3. \(\frac{7}{8}=\frac{3}{8}+\frac{4}{8}\)

Any pair of numerators that adds to 7 is correct.

    Problem 3: Missing part

    1. \(5 – 2 = 3\), so \(\frac{5}{10}=\frac{2}{10}+\frac{3}{10}\)
    2. \(9 – 4 = 5\), so \(\frac{9}{12}=\frac{5}{12}+\frac{4}{12}\)

    Problem 4: Add like fractions

    1. \(1 + 2 = 3\), so \(\frac{1}{5}+\frac{2}{5}=\frac{3}{5}\)
    2. \(3 + 4 = 7\), so \(\frac{3}{8}+\frac{4}{8}=\frac{7}{8}\)
    3. \(5 + 4 = 9\), so \(\frac{5}{12}+\frac{4}{12}=\frac{9}{12}\)
    4. \(20 + 35 = 55\), so \(\frac{20}{100}+\frac{35}{100}=\frac{55}{100}\)

Problem 5: Add with a model

The green part is \(\frac{3}{10}\) and the pink part is \(\frac{4}{10}\). Together, 7 of the 10 parts are shaded.

    Sum1/101/101/101/101/101/101/101/101/101/10
    7 tenths in all.

    Answer: \(\frac{3}{10}+\frac{4}{10}=\frac{7}{10}\)

Grade 4 Adding Worksheet Answer Key: problems 6–10

    Problem 6: Subtract like fractions

    1. \(5 – 2 = 3\), so \(\frac{5}{6}-\frac{2}{6}=\frac{3}{6}\)
    2. \(9 – 4 = 5\), so \(\frac{9}{10}-\frac{4}{10}=\frac{5}{10}\)
    3. \(11 – 5 = 6\), so \(\frac{11}{12}-\frac{5}{12}=\frac{6}{12}\)
    4. \(8 – 3 = 5\), so \(\frac{8}{8}-\frac{3}{8}=\frac{5}{8}\)

Problem 7: Subtract with a model

Five parts are shaded and 2 are crossed out, leaving 3 parts.

    Answer: \(\frac{5}{8}-\frac{2}{8}=\frac{3}{8}\)
