Probability: Sample Spaces, Independence and Conditional Probability – Algebra 2 math worksheet answer key

Each solution shows the rule used, the substitution and the result in bold. If your answer differs, check whether you used the right denominator for conditional probabilities and whether you subtracted the overlap in the addition rule.

Problem 1: Sample space of two actions

    1. Sample space: \(\{H1,H2,H3,H4,H5,H6,T1,T2,T3,T4,T5,T6\}\). There are 12 outcomes.
    2. The event is \(\{H2,H4,H6\}\), so \(P=\frac{3}{12}=\) \(\frac{1}{4}\).

    Problem 2: Events as subsets

    1. \(A=\{2,4,6\}\) and \(B=\{4,5,6\}\).
    2. “\(A\) and \(B\)” \(=\{4,6\}\); “\(A\) or \(B\)” \(=\{2,4,5,6\}\); “not \(A\)” \(=\{1,3,5\}\).
    3. \(P(A\text{ or }B)=\frac{4}{6}=\) \(\frac{2}{3}\).

    Problem 3: Use the complement

    1. \(1-0.35=\) \(0.65\)
    2. \(1-\frac{3}{8}=\) \(\frac{5}{8}\)
    3. The only outcome with no heads is TTT, with probability \(\frac{1}{8}\). So \(1-\frac{1}{8}=\) \(\frac{7}{8}\).

Problem 4: Cards from a deck

    1. \(\frac{13}{52}=\) \(\frac{1}{4}\)
    2. \(\frac{4}{52}=\) \(\frac{1}{13}\)

    4. \(1-\frac{13}{52}=\frac{39}{52}=\) \(\frac{3}{4}\)

Problem 5: Apply the addition rule

    1. \(0.5+0.3-0.1=\) \(0.7\)
    2. \(\frac{3}{8}+\frac{4}{8}-\frac{1}{8}=\frac{6}{8}=\) \(\frac{3}{4}\)

    Problem 6: Find the overlap

Rearrange the addition rule: \(P(A\text{ and }B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\text{ or }B)=0.5+0.6-0.8=\) \(0.3\).

    Problem 7: Heart or king

\(P(\text{heart})=\frac{13}{52}\), \(P(\text{king})=\frac{4}{52}\), and the king of hearts is in both: \(\frac{1}{52}\).

    \(\frac{13}{52}+\frac{4}{52}-\frac{1}{52}=\frac{16}{52}=\) \(\frac{4}{13}\)

Problem 8: Read a Venn diagram

    Problem 12: Area model

    The regions come from products: \(0.6\cdot0.5=0.30\), \(0.6\cdot0.5=0.30\), \(0.4\cdot0.5=0.20\), \(0.4\cdot0.5=0.20\).

    A and B0.30A, not B0.30B, not A0.20neither0.20A: 0.6not A: 0.4B: 0.5not B: 0.5
Each area is a product of two probabilities.

Problem 15: Conditional from a table

    1. Use the grade 9 column (\(50\) students): \(\frac{30}{50}=\) \(\frac{3}{5}\)

    Problem 19: Free throws

    1. \(0.7\cdot 0.7=\) \(0.49\)
    2. \(0.3\cdot 0.3=\) \(0.09\)
    3. Make then miss, or miss then make: \(2(0.7)(0.3)=\) \(0.42\) (check: \(0.49+0.09+0.42=1\))

Problem 20: Language and art classes

    1. Both: \(20\); Spanish only \(50\); art only \(25\). \(\frac{70+45-20}{120}=\frac{95}{120}=\) \(\frac{19}{24}\)

    3. \(\frac{20}{70}=\) \(\frac{2}{7}\) and \(\frac{20}{45}=\) \(\frac{4}{9}\)
    4. \(P(\text{Spanish})\cdot P(\text{art})=\frac{7}{12}\cdot\frac{3}{8}=\frac{7}{32}\approx 0.219\), but \(P(\text{both})=\frac{1}{6}\approx 0.167\). Not independent

    Problem 21: Flu shot study

    1. \(\frac{12}{200}=\) \(0.06\)
    2. \(\frac{45}{300}=\) \(0.15\)

    Problem 23: Weekend weather

    1. \(0.4\cdot 0.3=\) \(0.12\)
    2. \(0.4+0.3-0.12=\) \(0.58\)

    Problem 24: Defective parts

    1. \(P(\text{defective})=0.6\cdot 0.02+0.4\cdot 0.05=0.012+0.020=\) \(0.032\)
    2. \(P(A|\text{defective})=\frac{0.6\cdot 0.02}{0.032}=\frac{0.012}{0.032}=\) \(\frac{3}{8}=0.375\)
