This grade 5 coordinate test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 9 test questions on the coordinate plane.
Use this answer key to score the coordinate plane test out of 20 points. Each solution includes a scoring guide that shows how the points are awarded. Give partial credit only where the guide allows it.
Grade 5 Coordinate Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Vocabulary (2 points)
(a) The x-axis.
(b) \((0, 0)\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.
Question 2: Reading points (2 points)
(a) A \((1, 6)\), B \((4, 2)\).
(b) C \((7, 5)\), D \((5, 0)\).
Scoring: 1 point for each part; both pairs must be correct, with the x-coordinate first.
Question 3: Plotting points (2 points)
(a) P: 2 right, 6 up. Q: 5 right, 3 up. R: 8 right, 1 up.
(b) The closest point to the x-axis has the smallest y-coordinate. That is R, with y = 1.
Scoring: 1 point for all three points correctly plotted and labeled; 1 point for answering R.
Question 4: Points on the axes (2 points)
(a) On the x-axis y = 0, so the point is \((5, 0)\).
(b) On the y-axis x = 0, so the point is \((0, 8)\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct ordered pair.
Question 5: Distances (2 points)
(a) Same y-coordinate: \(9 – 1 = 8\) units.
(b) Same x-coordinate: \(11 – 2 = 9\) units.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct distance.
Grade 5 Coordinate Test Answer Key: questions 6–9
Question 6: Rectangle on a grid (3 points)
(a) U has the x-coordinate of R (2) and the y-coordinate of T (5): \((2, 5)\).
(b) RS = \(9 – 2 = 7\) cm and ST = \(5 – 1 = 4\) cm. Perimeter: \(7 + 4 + 7 + 4 = 22\) cm.
Scoring: 1 point for part (a). Part (b): 1 point for side lengths 7 and 4, 1 point for the perimeter 22 cm.
Question 7: Plant data (3 points)
(a) \((1, 2)\), \((2, 3)\), \((3, 5)\), \((4, 6)\), \((5, 8)\).
(c) At week 3 the plant was 5 inches tall.
Scoring: 1 point for the five ordered pairs with week first; 1 point for plotting all five points; 1 point for the meaning of week 3 and 5 inches.
Question 8: Town map (3 points)
(a) \((5, 6)\).
(b) Same x-coordinate: \(6 – 1 = 5\) blocks.
(c) Library to Pool: \(5 – 1 = 4\) blocks. Total: \(5 + 4 = 9\) blocks.
Scoring: 1 point for each part.
Question 9: Check the claim (1 point)
No. In \((3, 8)\) the point is 3 right and 8 up. In \((8, 3)\) it is 8 right and 3 up. The order of the coordinates matters, so they are different points.
Scoring: 1 point for saying no with a correct explanation about the order of coordinates.
