This grade 4 multiplicative comparison worksheet gives 24 problems on multiplicative comparison and multi-step problems, ordered from easy to hard, with a separate answer key.
These 24 problems practice multiplicative comparison and multi-step problems from Common Core standards 4.OA.A.1, 4.OA.A.2, and 4.OA.A.3. They begin with reading a multiplication equation as a comparison, then solve for larger and smaller amounts using a letter for the unknown.
The last six problems are multi-step word problems that combine multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Estimate to check each answer.
Grade 4 Multiplicative Comparison Worksheet: problems 1–5
Problem 1: Read the equation
Complete the sentence: \(24 = 4 \times 6\) means 24 is ___ times as many as 6.
Problem 2: Two sentences
Write two comparison sentences for \(35 = 5 \times 7\).
Problem 3: Write the equation
- Write an equation for “18 is 3 times as many as 6.”
- Write an equation for “42 is 6 times as many as 7.”
Problem 4: Five times as many
Find 5 times as many as 7.
Problem 5: Pencils
Priya has 6 pencils. Noah has 4 times as many pencils as Priya. How many pencils does Noah have?
Grade 4 Multiplicative Comparison Worksheet: problems 6–10
Problem 6: Tall tree
A tree is 9 feet tall. A building is 5 times as tall as the tree. How tall is the building?
Problem 7: Find the unknown
The number 48 is 6 times as many as \(n\). Write an equation and find \(n\).
Problem 8: How many times
How many times as long is the 36-inch ribbon as the 9-inch ribbon?
Problem 9: More than or times
- Find 7 more than 5.
- Find 7 times as many as 5.
Problem 10: Add or multiply
Write adding or multiplying to tell how each sentence compares.
- A rope is 3 feet longer than a ribbon.
- A rope is 3 times as long as a ribbon.
- The red bus is 8 feet shorter than the blue bus.
Grade 4 Multiplicative Comparison Worksheet: problems 11–15
Problem 11: Pages read
Sofia reads 12 pages. Her brother reads 3 times as many pages. How many pages does her brother read?
Problem 12: Stickers and a letter
Mei has 56 stickers. That is 7 times as many as Aisha has. Write an equation with the letter \(s\) for Aisha’s stickers and solve it.
Problem 13: Bus and van
A school bus is 40 feet long. A van is 8 feet long. How many times as long as the van is the bus?
Problem 14: Pencils sold
The school store sold 72 pencils on Monday. That is 8 times as many as it sold on Friday. Write an equation with the letter \(p\) and find how many pencils were sold on Friday.
Problem 15: More and times
Liam has 8 baseball cards. Jamal has 24 baseball cards.
- How many more cards does Jamal have?
- How many times as many cards does Jamal have?
Grade 4 Multiplicative Comparison Worksheet: problems 16–20
Problem 16: Two amounts together
Maya has 9 stickers. Sofia has 4 times as many stickers as Maya. How many stickers do they have together?
Problem 17: Estimate and solve
Mei has 62 beads. Diego has 5 times as many beads as Mei. Round 62 to the nearest ten to estimate how many beads Diego has. Then find the exact number.
Problem 18: Savings by month
Ethan saved $15 in January. In February he saved 3 times as much as in January. In March he saved $8 less than in February. Use the letters \(f\) and \(m\) to write equations, then find how much he saved in March.
Problem 19: Concert tickets
A child ticket costs $9. A VIP ticket costs 4 times as much as a child ticket. Priya buys 1 VIP ticket and 2 child tickets. How much does she spend in all?
Problem 20: Marbles gift
Jamal has 6 marbles. Ava has 5 times as many marbles as Jamal. Ava gives 8 marbles to Liam. Write equations with the letter \(m\) and find how many marbles Ava has now.
Grade 4 Multiplicative Comparison Worksheet: problems 21–24
Problem 21: Runs scored
The Tigers scored 7 runs in a Little League game. The Lions scored 3 times as many runs as the Tigers. The Eagles scored 4 fewer runs than the Lions. How many runs did the three teams score in all?
Problem 22: Is it reasonable
A farm has 38 hens. It has 7 times as many chicks as hens. Noah says there are 366 chicks. Use estimation to explain why his answer is not reasonable, then find the correct number.
Problem 23: Fruit stand
Diego sells 25 apples at the farmers market. He sells 4 times as many oranges as apples, and 15 fewer pears than oranges. How many pieces of fruit does he sell in all?
Problem 24: Beads and bags
Maya has 72 beads. That is 9 times as many beads as Sofia has. Then Sofia buys 5 bags with 8 beads in each bag. How many beads does Sofia have now?
