Grade 5 Classifying Test Answer Key: questions 1–5

Question 1: Triangles by sides (2 points)

    (a) Two sides are equal: isosceles.

    (b) No sides are equal: scalene.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct name.

Question 2: Triangles by angles (2 points)

    (a) One angle is \(90^{\circ}\): right.

    (b) One angle is greater than \(90^{\circ}\): obtuse.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct name.

Question 3: Name the figures (2 points)

    (a) Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and there are no right angles: parallelogram.

    (b) Exactly one pair of parallel sides: trapezoid.

    ParallelogramTrapezoid
Names of Figures 1 and 2.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct name.

    Question 4: Properties (2 points)

    (a) 2 pairs.

    (b) Any two of: four equal sides; both pairs of opposite sides parallel; opposite angles equal.

Scoring: 1 point for (a). 1 point for (b) for two correct attributes.

Question 5: True or false (2 points)

    (a) True. A square has four equal sides and opposite sides parallel.

    (b) False. A parallelogram does not need right angles. A rhombus with no right angles is a parallelogram but not a rectangle.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer with a reason.

Grade 5 Classifying Test Answer Key: questions 6–9

    Question 6: Hierarchy (3 points)

    (a) Trapezoid. (b) Rectangle. (c) Square.

    QuadrilateralTrapezoidParallelogramRectangleRhombusSquare
    The completed hierarchy.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct box.

Question 7: Every name that fits (3 points)

    (a) Square.

    (b) Any two of: rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, quadrilateral.

    (c) A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles. This shape has four right angles and its opposite sides are parallel.

Scoring: 1 point for each part.

Question 8: Sort the quadrilaterals (3 points)

    (a) Shapes with two pairs of parallel sides: A, B, D, and E.

    (b) B has four equal sides and no right angles.

    (c) C has exactly one pair of parallel sides.

Scoring: 1 point for each part. In (a) all four letters are needed.

Question 9: Find the error (1 point)

A trapezoid with a top side of 7 cm, a bottom side of 13 cm, and slanted legs has only one pair of parallel sides. A parallelogram needs two pairs, so this trapezoid is not a parallelogram.

Scoring: 1 point for a correct example with exactly one pair of parallel sides.
