Key takeaway: This grade 1 halves fourths test checks whether first graders can name equal shares, shade them and explain a whole. It holds 8 questions for 20 points, and students need only a pencil and a crayon.
Drawing counts as much as writing. Therefore children show their equal shares on the page.
This test checks halves and fourths for Grade 1. It has 8 short questions and is worth 20 points. Students may use a pencil and a crayon. Read each question aloud if needed. Allow about 30 minutes.

Grade 1 Halves Fourths Test: questions 1–5
1. Equal or not equal (2 points)
Look at the shapes.
- Write the letter of the shape that shows halves. (1 point)
- Write the letter of the shape that shows fourths. (1 point)
2. Name the shares (2 points)
- A shape is cut into 2 equal shares. Each share is called a ______. (1 point)
- A shape is cut into 4 equal shares. Each share is called a fourth or a ______. (1 point)
3. Shade the shares (3 points)
Follow the directions.
- Shade one half of the rectangle. (1 point)
- Shade 3 fourths of the circle. (1 point)
- How many fourths of the circle are not shaded? (1 point)
4. Make a whole (2 points)
- How many halves make 1 whole? (1 point)
- How many fourths make 1 whole? (1 point)
5. Cut the shapes (3 points)
Draw lines to cut each shape.
- Cut the rectangle into halves. (1 point)
- Cut the circle into fourths. (1 point)
- How many equal shares does the circle have now? (1 point)
Grade 1 Halves Fourths Test: questions 6–8
6. Bigger or smaller (2 points)
The two squares are the same size. One share is colored in each.
- Which colored share is bigger, A or B? (1 point)
- Write why. (1 point)
7. Pizza for two (3 points)
Maya has a pizza cut into 4 equal slices. She eats 1 slice. Diego eats 1 slice.
- What is each slice called? (1 point)
- How many fourths did they eat? (1 point)
- How many fourths are left? (1 point)
8. Share the sandwich (3 points)
Aisha and Noah share one sandwich equally.
- Into how many equal shares must the sandwich be cut? (1 point)
- Each child gets a ______ of the sandwich. (1 point)
- Four children share a sandwich the same size. Is each share bigger or smaller than Aisha’s share? (1 point)
What is on a grade 1 halves fourths test?
The first question shows four shapes, and children pick which one shows halves. Next, they fill in the word for 2 equal shares and for 4. Then comes a shading task with a rectangle in halves and a circle in fourths, worth 3 points.
How does the cutting question work?
Children get a blank rectangle and a blank circle. They draw lines to make halves, and then fourths. Because the lines must make equal parts, a quick fold test helps.
What about the comparison and story questions?
Two same-size squares appear, one cut in halves and one in fourths. Children say which colored share is smaller. In the pizza question, Maya and Diego each eat 1 of 4 slices. Finally, Aisha and Noah share a sandwich equally, so it needs 2 equal shares.
How should teachers use the results?
Check which children cut unequal parts, and set those students up with folding paper. Then reteach the words half and fourth with food pictures. Another quick drawing task a week later will show who has mastered it.
