Grade 1 Halves Test Answer Key: questions 1–5

Question 1: Equal or not equal (2 points)

    ABCD
A and C have equal shares. B and D do not.
    1. A has 2 equal shares. B has 2 shares of different sizes. A.
    2. C has 4 equal shares. D has 4 shares of different sizes. C.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct letter.

Question 2: Name the shares (2 points)

    1. 2 equal shares are halves. Each share is a half.
    2. A fourth is also called a quarter.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct word.

Question 3: Shade the shares (3 points)

    RectangleCircle
One half of the rectangle and 3 fourths of the circle are shaded.
    1. Shade 1 of the 2 shares.
    2. Shade 3 of the 4 shares.
    3. \(4 – 3 = 1\). 1 fourth is not shaded.

Scoring: 1 point for each part. Any matching share may be shaded.

    Question 4: Make a whole (2 points)

    1. 2 halves make 1 whole.
    2. 4 fourths make 1 whole.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct number.

Question 5: Cut the shapes (3 points)

    RectangleCircle
The rectangle has one line down the middle. The circle has two lines that cross in the middle.
    1. One line down the middle makes 2 equal shares.
    2. Two lines that cross at the center make 4 equal shares.
    3. 4 equal shares.

Scoring: 1 point for each part. The lines must make equal shares. Other correct cuts also earn the point.

Grade 1 Halves Test Answer Key: questions 6–8

Question 6: Bigger or smaller (2 points)

    1. A has the bigger colored share.
    2. A has only 2 shares and B has 4 shares. More shares means each share is smaller.

Scoring: 1 point for A. 1 point for a reason that says B has more shares or smaller shares.

Question 7: Pizza for two (3 points)

Two slices are eaten (colored). Two slices are left.
    1. Each slice is a fourth (or quarter).
    2. \(1 + 1 = 2\). They ate 2 fourths.

Scoring: 1 point for each part. Accept quarter for part a.

Question 8: Share the sandwich (3 points)

    1. 2 children need 2 equal shares.
