Key takeaway: This grade 5 divide whole test checks long division with four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors in 45 minutes. It has nine questions and a 20-point scale. Students estimate, complete an area model, find remainders, check a classmate’s work and solve word problems about apples, stickers and eggs. Calculators are not allowed, and partial credit rewards correct steps.
This 45-minute test covers dividing whole numbers (5.NBT.B.6) with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors. It has 9 questions worth 20 points. Show all work, because partial credit is given for correct steps. Calculators are not allowed.

- Find \(912 : 24\). (1 point)
- Find \(1{,}573 : 13\). (1 point)
3. Estimate and calculate (2 points)
Look at the quotient \(3{,}892 : 41\).
- Estimate the quotient. (1 point)
- Find the exact quotient and remainder. (1 point)
4. Complete the area model (2 points)
The area model shows \(884 : 26\).
- Find the missing products. (1 point)
- Find the quotient. (1 point)
5. Quotient with a remainder (2 points)
Find \(7{,}845 : 37\). Write the quotient and the remainder.
Grade 5 Divide Whole Test: questions 6–9
6. Check Jamal's answer (2 points)
Jamal says \(6{,}408 : 12 = 54\). Show that his answer is not correct and find the correct quotient.
7. Bags of apples for sale (3 points)
A farmers market stand has 2,400 apples. The apples are packed in bags of 15. Each bag sells for $3.
- How many bags are filled? (2 points)
- How much money is collected if every bag is sold? (1 point)
8. Stickers in albums (2 points)
Mei has 3,000 stickers. Each album holds 48 stickers. How many albums can she fill completely, and how many stickers are left over?
9. Eggs at the bakery (3 points)
A bakery uses 2,520 eggs in 14 days. It uses the same number of eggs each day.
- How many eggs does the bakery use each day? (2 points)
- At this rate, how many days will 4,320 eggs last? (1 point)
What is on a 5th grade division test?
The first item asks for 8,424 divided by 6 and 2,880 divided by 40. Next come 912 divided by 24 and 1,573 divided by 13. Then students estimate 3,892 divided by 41 on a number line and find the exact answer. An area model for 884 divided by 26 has missing products, and a remainder question uses 7,845 divided by 37.
How can you manage time on the grade 5 divide whole test?
Spend about 12 minutes on the first two items, because they are quick. Then allow 20 minutes for estimating, the area model and the remainder problem. Jamal says that 6,408 divided by 12 equals 54, and students must show why it is wrong. Save the final 13 minutes for the three word problems. In one, 2,400 apples go into bags of 15 and each bag sells for $3.
What habits earn more points?
First, write partial quotients in a column so each place is visible. Second, check by multiplying. For the sticker question, 3,000 divided by 48 gives 62 albums with 24 stickers left, and 48 times 62 plus 24 returns 3,000. Also read the question words, since eggs per day is a division, but total money is a multiplication after it.
How do you build on the score you receive?
Sort lost points into estimate, partial quotient and remainder errors. Then redo one item in each group with an area model. A few days later, try the quiz as a quick refresher.
