This grade 5 decimals test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 8 test questions on reading, comparing and rounding decimals.
Use this key to score the decimals test out of 20 points. Each solution gives the working, the answer in bold and a scoring guide for partial credit. Accept equivalent forms, such as 5.70 for 5.7 when a question asks for rounding to the hundredths place.
Grade 5 Decimals Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Reading and writing decimals (2 points)
(a) 46 of 100 squares are shaded: \(0.46\), forty-six hundredths
(b) \(9.08\).
Scoring: 1 point for part (a) (both the numeral and the words are needed) and 1 point for part (b).
Question 2: Expanded form (3 points)
(a) \(36.409 = 3 \times 10 + 6 \times 1 + 4 \times \frac{1}{10} + 9 \times \frac{1}{1000}\).
(b) The 4 is in the tenths place: \(0.4\).
Scoring: (a) 1 point for the whole-number part (3 x 10 + 6 x 1) and 1 point for the decimal part (4 x 1/10 + 9 x 1/1000); a term for 0 hundredths is not required. (b) 1 point.
Question 3: Decimal from expanded form (2 points)
5 tens, 3 ones, 0 tenths, 2 hundredths, 7 thousandths: \(53.027\).
Scoring: 2 points for 53.027. 1 point if the digits are right but the 0 in the tenths place is missing (53.27).
Question 4: Comparing decimals (3 points)
- \(0.58 < 0.6\).
- \(14.205 < 14.25\).
- \(7.30 = 7.300\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct symbol.
Question 5: Ordering decimals (2 points)
Use 3 decimal places: 4.090, 4.900, 4.089, 4.091. Order: 4.089, 4.090, 4.091, 4.900.
\(4.089,\,\,4.09,\,\,4.091,\,\,4.9\)
Scoring: 2 points for the correct order. 1 point if exactly one number is out of place or if the order is greatest to least.
Grade 5 Decimals Test Answer Key: questions 6–8
Question 6: Rounding 5.748 (3 points)
- Tenths digit is 7, so round up: \(6\).
- Hundredths digit is 4, so keep the 7: \(5.7\).
- Thousandths digit is 8, so round up: \(5.75\).
Scoring: 1 point for each correct rounding.
Question 7: Rounding on a number line (2 points)
(a) \(2.4\).
(b) The halfway point between 2.3 and 2.4 is 2.35. Since 2.36 is greater than 2.35, it is closer to 2.4.
Scoring: 1 point for 2.4. 1 point for a correct explanation using halfway, or the hundredths digit 6 being 5 or more.
Question 8: Swim times (3 points)
(a) Use 3 decimal places: 31.080, 31.800, 31.075. The least time is \(31.075\) seconds.
(b) 31.08 has hundredths digit 8, so it rounds up to 31.1. 31.8 stays \(31.8\). 31.075 has hundredths digit 7, so it rounds up to 31.1. \(31.1,\,\,31.8,\,\,31.1\)
Scoring: (a) 1 point. (b) 2 points for all three rounded correctly; 1 point if two are correct.
