This grade 2 subtract test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 9 test questions on subtracting within 100.
This key shows the full worked solution for each question and how the 20 points are given. Give credit when a student reaches the right answer by a different valid strategy, such as counting up or using blocks.
Grade 2 Subtract Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Basic differences (2 points)
- Ones: \(8 – 4 = 4\). Tens: \(7 – 3 = 4\). \(78 – 34 = 44\)
- Ones: \(5 – 2 = 3\). Tens: \(9 – 6 = 3\). \(95 – 62 = 33\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct difference.
Question 2: Blocks after trading (2 points)
- \(5 – 2 = 3\) tens and \(13 – 8 = 5\) ones are left. 3 tens and 5 ones
- 3 tens and 5 ones is 35. \(63 – 28 = 35\)
Scoring: 1 point for 3 tens and 5 ones, 1 point for 35.
Question 3: Trade a ten (2 points)
- Ones: \(1\) is less than \(6\), so trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now there are \(11\) ones and \(6\) tens. Ones: \(11 – 6 = 5\). Tens: \(6 – 4 = 2\). \(71 – 46 = 25\)
- Ones: \(0\) is less than \(7\), so trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now there are \(10\) ones and \(7\) tens. Ones: \(10 – 7 = 3\). Tens: \(7 – 3 = 4\). \(80 – 37 = 43\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct difference.
Question 4: Jumps on a number line (2 points)
- \(3 + 40 + 2 = 45\). 45
- The jumps cover the gap from 27 to 72. \(72 – 27 = 45\)
Scoring: 1 point for the total of the jumps, 1 point for a correct subtraction sentence.
Question 5: Find the mistake (2 points)
- Aisha subtracted 4 from 9 in the ones column. But the top digit is 4 and the bottom digit is 9. She should have traded 1 ten for 10 ones.
- Ones: \(4\) is less than \(9\), so trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now there are \(14\) ones and \(7\) tens. Ones: \(14 – 9 = 5\). Tens: \(7 – 5 = 2\). \(84 – 59 = 25\)
Check: \(25 + 59 = 84\).
Scoring: 1 point for saying she subtracted the smaller digit from the bigger one (or did not trade), 1 point for 25.
Grade 2 Subtract Test Answer Key: questions 6–9
Question 6: Missing numbers (2 points)
- \(90 – 46 = 44\). \(44\)
- \(29 + 38 = 67\). \(67\)
Scoring: 1 point for each correct missing number.
Question 7: Pages left (2 points)
- \(100 – 64\) (the whole is 100 pages and 64 pages are read).
- Think of 100 as 9 tens and 10 ones. Ones: \(10 – 4 = 6\). Tens: \(9 – 6 = 3\). \(100 – 64 = 36\), so 36 pages
Check: \(36 + 64 = 100\).
Scoring: 1 point for a correct subtraction sentence, 1 point for 36 pages.
Question 8: Baseball cards (3 points)
- \(29 + 18 = 47\). 47 cards
- Ones: \(5\) is less than \(7\), so trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now there are \(15\) ones and \(7\) tens. Ones: \(15 – 7 = 8\). Tens: \(7 – 4 = 3\). \(85 – 47 = 38\) 38 cards
- \(38 + 47 = 85\)
Scoring: 1 point for 47, 1 point for 38, 1 point for a correct check such as 38 + 47 = 85.
Question 9: Why trading works (3 points)
- 1 ten is worth 10 ones. Priya traded 1 ten for 10 ones, so the value did not change: \(40 + 12 = 52\).
- Ones: \(2\) is less than \(7\), so trade 1 ten for 10 ones. Now there are \(12\) ones and \(4\) tens. Ones: \(12 – 7 = 5\). Tens: \(4 – 2 = 2\). \(52 – 27 = 25\)
- \(25 + 27 = 52\)
Scoring: 1 point for an explanation using 1 ten = 10 ones (or 40 + 12 = 52), 1 point for 25, 1 point for a correct check.
