This grade 2 money test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 9 test questions on money: dollars and coins.
This answer key gives worked solutions and a scoring guide for the 9-question money test. Award partial credit as shown. If the student counts correctly but forgets the cent or dollar sign, take off one point at most. Total: 20 points.
Grade 2 Money Test Answer Key: questions 1–5
Question 1: Count the coins (2 points)
Count: 25, 50, 60, 61, 62, 63. The total is 63¢.
Scoring: 1 point for counting the biggest coins first and correct skip counting, 1 point for the correct total with the ¢ sign.
Question 2: Bills and coins (2 points)
The bill is \(\$1.00\). Two quarters are 50¢. The dime is 10¢. Total: 100 + 50 + 10 = 160 cents.
The total is \(\$1.60\).
Scoring: 1 point for 160 cents (or equal reasoning), 1 point for writing it as $1.60.
Question 3: Write the amount (2 points)
- \(\$4.30\)
- 85¢
Scoring: 1 point for each part. Accept $4.30 only with the decimal point.
Question 4: Two ways to make 45 cents (2 points)
Way 1: 1 quarter, 2 dimes (\(25 + 10 + 10 = 45\)). Way 2: 4 dimes and 1 nickel (\(10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 45\)).
Other correct answers are possible.
Scoring: 1 point for each different set of coins that is worth exactly 45¢.
Question 5: Compare two wallets (2 points)
Ava: 10, 20, 30, 35, so she has 35¢. Ben: 25, 26, 27, so he has 27¢. \(35 – 27 = 8\).
Ava has 8¢ more.
Scoring: 1 point for both totals, 1 point for Ava and the difference of 8¢.
Grade 2 Money Test Answer Key: questions 6–9
Question 6: Buying school supplies (2 points)
- \(45 + 30 = 75\). Maya spends 75¢.
- \(100 – 75 = 25\). The change is 25¢.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct part.
Question 7: Fewest coins (2 points)
Use the biggest coins first: \(68 – 25 = 43\), \(43 – 25 = 18\), \(18 – 10 = 8\), \(8 – 5 = 3\), then 3 pennies.
Use 2 quarters, 1 dime, 1 nickel, and 3 pennies (7 coins).
Scoring: 1 point for a set worth 68¢, 1 point for using the fewest coins.
Question 8: Ethan at the store (3 points)
- \(6 + 2 = 8\). Ethan spends $8.
- \(10 – 8 = 2\). Ethan has $2 left.
- Since \(2 < 3\), no. He needs $1 more.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct part. In part c, accept any correct comparison of $2 and $3.
Question 9: Noah counts his savings (3 points)
a) Quarters: 25, 50. Dimes: 60, 70, 80. Nickels: 85, 90, 95, 100. Pennies: 101, 102, 103, 104, 105. The total is 105¢.
b) 105 cents is 100 cents and 5 cents, which is 1 dollar and 5 cents: \(\$1.05\).
Scoring: part a, 1 point for correct counting by coin type and 1 point for 105¢. Part b, 1 point for $1.05.
