Grade 2 Length Test Answer Key: questions 1–5

Question 1: Reading rulers (2 points)

    1. The marker goes from 0 to 7: 7 inches.
    2. The tape goes from 2 to 8. \(8 – 2 = 6\): 6 inches.
    Marker 7 inTape 6 in012345678910inches
The marker is 7 inches. The tape is 6 inches.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct length with the unit. Reading 8 for the tape earns no point.

Question 2: Tools and units (2 points)

    1. A door is tall: feet.
    2. A soccer field is very long: measuring tape.

Scoring: 1 point for each correct answer.

Question 3: Same ribbon, two units (2 points)

    1. The ribbon goes from 0 to 12: 12 centimeters.
    2. A foot is a longer unit than an inch. It takes fewer long units to cover the same table, so the number is smaller.

Scoring: 1 point for 12 cm with the unit. 1 point for explaining that a foot is longer than an inch (or that longer units give smaller numbers).

    Question 4: Estimate (2 points)

    1. Count by 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20. About 20 inches.
    2. A door is a little taller than a grown-up: 7 feet.

Scoring: 1 point for an estimate of 20 inches (accept 18 to 22). 1 point for 7 feet.

Question 5: Two pencils (2 points)

    1. Noah’s pencil is longer.
    2. \(22 – 15 = 7\). It is 7 centimeters longer.
    Priya15 cmNoah15 cm7 cm
The extra 7 cm on Noah’s pencil.

Scoring: 1 point for Noah. 1 point for 7 cm with the unit.

Grade 2 Length Test Answer Key: questions 6–9

Question 6: Jump rope (2 points)

    \(36 + 27 = 63\). The rope is 63 inches long. (Break up: 36 + 20 = 56, then 56 + 7 = 63.)

Scoring: 1 point for a correct equation. 1 point for 63 inches with the unit.

Question 7: Cut the string (2 points)

    \(82 – 35 = 47\). There are 47 inches left.

    405060708090-35
A jump of 35 to the left from 82 lands on 47.

Scoring: 1 point for a correct number line jump or subtraction equation. 1 point for 47 inches with the unit.

Question 8: Garden hose (3 points)

    1. \(28 + 30 = 58\). She uses 58 feet.
    2. \(75 – 58 = 17\). There are 17 feet not used.

Scoring: 1 point for 58 feet. For part (b), 1 point for subtracting 58 from 75 and 1 point for 17 feet with the unit.

Question 9: Bridge sections (3 points)

    1. \(100 – 64 = ?\) (or \(64 + ? = 100\)).
    2. \(100 – 64 = 36\). The second section is 36 feet.
    3. \(64 + 36 = 100\). The sum matches the whole bridge.

Scoring: 1 point for each part: a correct equation, 36 feet, and a correct check.
