Grade 2 Fluency Test Answer Key: questions 1–5

Question 1: Adding facts (2 points)

    1. \(8+5=13\)
    2. \(7+9=16\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct sum.

Question 2: Subtracting facts (2 points)

    1. \(14-6=8\)
    2. \(18-9=9\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct difference.

Question 3: Missing numbers (2 points)

    1. \(8\): \(7+8=15\)
    2. \(8\): \(17-8=9\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct missing number.

Question 4: Ten frames (2 points)

    103+
    Move 1 dot: 10 and 3.
    1. \(9+4\)
    2. \(9+4=13\) (10 + 3 = 13)

Scoring: 1 point for the equation, 1 point for the sum 13.

Question 5: Pairs of dots (2 points)

1313 is odd: 1 left over
    Thirteen is odd.
    1. Odd. There are 6 pairs and 1 dot left over.
    2. \(16=8+8\)

Scoring: 1 point for odd with a reason about the leftover dot, 1 point for 8 + 8.

Grade 2 Fluency Test Answer Key: questions 6–9

Question 6: Number line jumps (2 points)

    1. \(6+7=13\) (4 + 3 = 7 total jump)
    2. \(13-7=6\) or \(13-6=7\)

    Scoring: 1 point for 6 + 7 = 13, 1 point for a correct subtraction fact.

Question 7: Equal addends (2 points)

    1. \(12=6+6\)
    2. \(18=9+9\)

Scoring: 1 point for each correct equation.

    Question 8: Balloons (4 points)

    1. \(9+8=17\)
    2. \(17-6=11\)
    3. Odd. 17 = 8 + 8 + 1, so one balloon has no partner.
    4. \(20-17=3\) balloons

Scoring: 1 point per part: the sum 17, the difference 11, odd with a reason, and 3.

Question 9: Near double reasoning (2 points)

Yes. \(7+7=14\) and 8 is 1 more than 7, so the sum is 1 more: \(14+1=15\).

Scoring: 1 point for yes, 1 point for a correct explanation about one more.
