Grade 1 Equations Worksheet Answer Key: problems 1–5

Problem 1: Does the scale balance?

The scale shows \(3 + 4 = 7\). The left side is \(3 + 4\), which is 7. The right side is 7. Both sides match, and the scale is level.

    The equation is true.

Problem 2: A scale that tips

The scale shows \(6 = 4 + 1\). The left side is 6. The right side is \(4 + 1 = 5\). Since \(6\) is not the same as 5, the scale tips to the left.

    The equation is false.

    Problem 3: True or false

    1. Both sides are 6. True.
    2. Left side \(5 + 2 = 7\), right side 7. True.
    3. Left side 9. Right side \(3 + 5 = 8\). False.
    4. Left side 10. Right side \(6 + 4 = 10\). True.

    Problem 4: Both sides

    1. \(4 + 4 = 8\) and \(5 + 3 = 8\). True.
    2. \(10 – 2 = 8\) and \(6 + 3 = 9\). False.
    3. \(7 + 0 = 7\) and \(7 – 0 = 7\). True.
    4. \(9 – 3 = 6\) and \(2 + 4 = 6\). True.

Problem 5: Fill the ten frame

The frame has 3 empty boxes. Count them: 8, 9, 10. That is 3 more counters.

7 counters plus 3 more fill all 10 boxes.

    \(7 + 3 = 10\). The missing number is 3.

Grade 1 Equations Worksheet Answer Key: problems 6–10

    Problem 6: Make it true

    1. \(5 + 3 = 8\). 8.
    2. \(9 – 4 = 5\). 5.
    3. \(12 = 6 + 6\). 12.
    4. \(7 = 15 – 8\). 7.

    Problem 7: Missing addend

    1. Count up from 6 to 11: 5. \(6 + 5 = 11\). 5.
    2. Count up from 5 to 9: 4. \(4 + 5 = 9\). 4.
    3. Count up from 8 to 17: 9. \(8 + 9 = 17\). 9.
    4. Count up from 7 to 14: 7. \(7 + 7 = 14\). 7.

Problem 8: Jump on the number line

    Count the steps from 8 to 14: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. That is 6 steps.

    891011121314+6
    The jump is 6.

    \(8 + 6 = 14\). The missing number is 6.

    Problem 9: Missing subtraction number

    1. Count up from 5 to 12: 7. \(12 – 7 = 5\). 7.
    2. Count up from 9 to 15: 6. \(15 – 6 = 9\). 6.
    3. Add back: \(7 + 6 = 13\). Check: \(13 – 6 = 7\). 13.
    4. Add back: \(8 + 3 = 11\). Check: \(11 – 3 = 8\). 11.

Problem 10: Unknown on the right

    1. \(13 = 5 + 8\). 5.
    2. \(16 = 9 + 7\). 7.
    3. \(15 – 4 = 11\). 4.
    4. \(18 – 9 = 9\). 9.

Grade 1 Equations Worksheet Answer Key: problems 11–15

    Problem 11: Add three groups

    Make a ten first: \(4 + 6 = 10\). Then \(10 + 5 = 15\).

    4 blue6 yellow5 green
    4 and 6 make 10. Add 5 more.

    \(4 + 6 + 5 = 15\). The sum is 15.

    Problem 12: Add three numbers

    1. \(2 + 8 = 10\), \(10 + 5 = 15\). 15.
    2. \(7 + 3 = 10\), \(10 + 6 = 16\). 16.
    3. \(5 + 5 = 10\), \(10 + 9 = 19\). 19.
    4. \(3 + 3 = 6\), \(6 + 4 = 10\). 10.

    Problem 13: Which equals 12?

    1. \(5 + 7 = 12\). Yes.
    2. \(20 – 8 = 12\). Yes.
    3. \(9 + 4 = 13\). No.
    4. \(6 + 6 = 12\). Yes.

    The letters are a, b, and d.

Problem 14: Make both sides equal

    1. Left side 13. \(10 + 3 = 13\). 3.
    2. Left side 14. \(10 + 4 = 14\). 10.
    3. Right side \(6 + 7 = 13\). \(8 + 5 = 13\). 5.
