Grade 2 Shapes Worksheet Answer Key: problems 1–5

    Problem 1: Count the sides

    Count the sides: 1, 2, 3. Count the corners: 1, 2, 3.

Shape A has 3 sides, 3 vertices, and it is a triangle.

    Problem 2: Name the quadrilateral

Any shape with 4 sides is a quadrilateral.

Shape B has two slanted sides and a short top, so it is a trapezoid. It is a quadrilateral.

    Problem 3: Five sides

A shape with 5 sides is a pentagon.

    Problem 4: Count the vertices

    Count the dots: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Shape C has 6 vertices. It has 6 sides, so it is a hexagon.

Problem 5: Most and fewest sides

    A has 5 sides, B has 3 sides, and C has 6 sides.

The most sides: C (hexagon, 6 sides). The fewest sides: B (triangle, 3 sides).

Grade 2 Shapes Worksheet Answer Key: problems 6–10

    Problem 6: Find the quadrilaterals

    Count sides: A has 4, B has 3, C has 4, D has 5.

The shapes with 4 sides are A and C.

    Problem 7: Draw a square

A shape with 4 equal sides and 4 square corners is a square.

    square
A square: 4 equal sides, 4 square corners.

Problem 8: Faces of a cube

Count the faces you can see: front, top, and right side. That is 3. The other 3 faces are hidden: back, bottom, and left.

    \(3 + 3 = 6\). A cube has 6 faces.

Problem 9: Shape of a face

Each face of a cube is a square. A square has 4 sides.

    Problem 10: Rows and columns

There are 3 rows and 4 columns.

    \(4 + 4 + 4 = 12\)

    There are 12 squares.

Grade 2 Shapes Worksheet Answer Key: problems 11–15

    Problem 11: Count the squares

There are 2 rows with 5 squares in each row.

    \(5 + 5 = 10\)

    The total is 10 squares.

    Problem 12: Repeated addition

Add 3 once for each of the 4 rows.

    \(3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\)

    3 columnsrow 1row 2row 3row 4
    4 rows of 3 squares.

    The total is 12 squares.

Problem 13: Draw rows and columns

Draw 3 rows with 3 squares in each row.

    3 columnsrow 1row 2row 3
    3 rows and 3 columns.

    \(3 + 3 + 3 = 9\)

    There are 9 squares.

    Problem 14: Floor tiles

Add 4 once for each of the 5 rows.

    \(4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20\)

    He uses 20 tiles.

    Problem 15: One half

The rectangle has 2 equal shares, and 1 share is shaded.

One half is shaded, or \(\frac{1}{2}\).

Grade 2 Shapes Worksheet Answer Key: problems 16–20

    Problem 16: One third

The circle has 3 equal shares, and 1 share is shaded.

One third is shaded, or \(\frac{1}{3}\).

    Problem 17: Three fourths

The rectangle has 4 equal shares. Shaded shares: 1, 2, 3.

    Three fourths are shaded.

    Problem 18: Cut a circle

Draw one line across the middle, then draw a second line across the middle that crosses the first one at a square corner.

    A circle cut into fourths.

Each share is called a fourth.

Problem 19: Same size, new shape

In A, the square is cut into 2 equal rectangles. In B, it is cut into 2 equal triangles.

Yes to both. Each share is a half because the 2 shares are the same size, even though the shapes are different.

    Problem 20: Which shows halves?

In A, the two parts are the same size. In B, one part is small and the other part is large.

A is cut into halves because halves must be equal shares.

Grade 2 Shapes Worksheet Answer Key: problems 21–24

    Problem 21: Sandwich halves

Each share is a half. She ate one half (\(\frac{1}{2}\)).

Two halves make the whole, so 2 halves make the whole sandwich.

    Problem 22: Pizza fourths

Each slice is a fourth. He ate one fourth (\(\frac{1}{4}\)).

    \(4 – 1 = 3\). There are 3 fourths left.

    Problem 23: Garden plants

Add 6 once for each of the 4 rows.

    \(6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24\)

    She plants 24 seeds.

    Problem 24: Cracker thirds

There are 3 equal shares, one for each friend, so 3 friends get a share.

Three thirds make the whole cracker.
