Operations with Decimals: Grade 5 Math Test Answer Key – PDF Download

This grade 5 decimal test answer key gives the full solution and the scoring guide for each of the 9 test questions on operations with decimals.

Use this key to score the decimal operations test out of 20 points. Each solution shows the work and a scoring guide that explains how points are earned. Give credit for correct reasoning even when a small arithmetic slip changes the final answer.

    Grade 5Common Core: 5.NBT.B.7

Grade 5 Decimal Test Answer Key: questions 1–5

Question 1: Add and subtract (2 points)

    1. \(14.76 + 8.90 = 23.66\). 23.66
    2. \(30.20 – 17.85 = 12.35\). 12.35

Scoring: 1 point for each correct result. Award 0 if the decimal points were not lined up.

Question 2: Hundredths grids (2 points)

    1. The grids show \(0.38\) and \(0.25\).
    2. \(0.38 + 0.25 = 0.63\). 0.63
    0.380.250.63+=
    38 + 25 = 63 squares.

Scoring: 1 point for both decimals, 1 point for the sum 0.63.

Question 3: Multiply decimals (2 points)

    1. \(6 \times 7 = 42\), two decimal places: \(0.42\). 0.42
    2. \(38 \times 25 = 950\), two decimal places: \(9.50\). 9.5

Scoring: 1 point for each product. A correct whole-number product with a misplaced decimal point earns no point.

Question 4: Area model of a product (2 points)

    1. There are 5 rows and 9 columns, so 45 squares overlap: \(0.5 \times 0.9 = 0.45\).
    2. Multiplying by 0.5, a number less than 1, takes only half of 0.9, so the product 0.45 is smaller than 0.9.
    0.90.50.5 × 0.9= 45 hundredths= 0.45
    45 of 100 squares overlap.

Scoring: 1 point for the correct sentence with the product 0.45; 1 point for an explanation that uses a factor less than 1.

Question 5: Divide decimals (2 points)

    1. \(15.6 : 4 = 3.9\). Check: \(4 \times 3.9 = 15.6\). 3.9
    2. \(504 : 12 = 42\). Check: \(42 \times 0.12 = 5.04\). 42

Scoring: 1 point for each quotient.

Grade 5 Decimal Test Answer Key: questions 6–9

Question 6: Lunch at the school store (2 points)

    1. \(\$5.75 + \$1.95 + \$1.25 = \$8.95\). $8.95
    2. \(\$10.00 – \$8.95 = \$1.05\). $1.05
    $5.75$1.95$1.25Total $8.95
Total $8.95, so the change is $1.05.

Scoring: 1 point for the total, 1 point for the change (a change computed correctly from a wrong total earns the point).

Question 7: Cheese at the deli (2 points)

    1. \(2.4 \times \$6.25 = \$15.00\), since \(24 \times 625 = 15000\). $15.00
    2. \(\$20.00 – \$15.00 = \$5.00\). $5.00

Scoring: 1 point for the cost, 1 point for the change.

Question 8: Trail repainting (3 points)

    1. \(7.2 : 0.45\)
    2. Multiply both numbers by 100: \(720 : 45 = 16\). 16 days
    3. \(9 \times 0.45 = 4.05\). 4.05 miles

Scoring: 1 point for the expression, 1 point for 16 days, 1 point for 4.05 miles.

Question 9: Student store sales (3 points)

    1. \(12 \times \$0.85 = \$10.20\). $10.20
    2. \(8 \times \$1.35 = \$10.80\). $10.80
    3. \(\$10.20 + \$10.80 = \$21.00\). $21.00

Scoring: 1 point for each part; part (c) may use incorrect earlier results.
