This grade 1 shapes worksheet gives 23 problems on 2d and 3d shapes, ordered from easy to hard, with a separate answer key.
These 23 problems practice 2D and 3D shapes. Students name shapes, count sides and corners, decide which attributes are defining, and put shapes together to make new shapes (1.G.A.1 and 1.G.A.2).
The first problems are about naming and counting. The last six are short word problems with shapes and solids.
Grade 1 Shapes Worksheet: problems 1–5
Problem 1: Naming shapes
Look at the shapes. Which letter shows the triangle?
Problem 2: Counting sides
How many sides does this shape have?
Problem 3: Counting corners
How many corners does this triangle have?
Problem 4: Square or rectangle
A shape has 4 sides that are all the same length. It has 4 square corners. What is the shape?
Problem 5: Round shapes
Answer yes or no. (a) Does a circle have straight sides? (b) Does a circle have corners?
Grade 1 Shapes Worksheet: problems 6–10
Problem 6: Color does not matter
Ben colored one triangle blue and one triangle orange. Are both shapes triangles? Write yes or no.
Problem 7: Size and turn
Are all three shapes triangles? Write yes or no.
Problem 8: Defining or not
Here are facts about a triangle. Write D if the fact is a defining attribute. Write N if it is not.
- It has 3 straight sides.
- It is red.
- It points up.
- It is closed.
Problem 9: Not a triangle
Which shapes are NOT triangles? Write the letters.
Problem 10: Drawing a shape
Draw a closed shape with 4 sides of the same length and 4 square corners. Write its name.
Grade 1 Shapes Worksheet: problems 11–15
Problem 11: Name the solid
Which solid is the cone? Write the letter.
Problem 12: Solids in real life
Write the name of the 3D shape. Use cube, cone, or cylinder.
- a can of soup
- a party hat
- a number cube
Problem 13: No circles
A cube, a cone, and a cylinder are shown. Which 3D shape has NO flat circle?
Problem 14: Two triangles
Two triangles of the same size are slid together along their longest sides. What shape do they make?
Problem 15: Two squares
Two squares of the same size touch along one side. What shape do they make?
Grade 1 Shapes Worksheet: problems 16–20
Problem 16: Two half circles
Two half circles of the same size are put together along the straight edge. What shape do they make?
Problem 17: Counting cubes
Count the cubes in the tower. How many cubes are there?
Problem 18: Sofia builds a house
Sofia builds a house from a square and a triangle. How many sides do the two shapes have in all?
Problem 19: Jamal joins squares
Jamal has 6 squares. He joins 2 squares to make each rectangle. How many rectangles can he make?
Problem 20: Two towers
Mei builds a tower of 4 cubes. Noah builds a tower of 3 cubes. How many cubes do they use in all?
Grade 1 Shapes Worksheet: problems 21–23
Problem 21: Aisha cuts squares
Aisha cuts each square from corner to corner. Each square becomes 2 triangles. How many triangles will she have from 3 squares?
Problem 22: Mystery shape
Diego says: “I have 4 sides that are the same length and 4 square corners.” (a) What shape is Diego describing? (b) How many corners do 2 of these shapes have in all?
Problem 23: Sorting solids
Liam sorted his solids. (a) How many solids does Liam have in all? (b) How many more cylinders than cubes does he have?
