Maths Mystère, a math mystery game in a buried pyramid

Maths Mystère is a math mystery game for Android set in a temple buried under the sand. Each floor of the pyramid matches a school year from Grade 6 (6ème) to Grade 12 (Terminale), and each room matches a chapter of the program.

To open a door, the player solves 10 riddles on one topic. Each right answer reveals a letter, and then the letters spell the secret word. There are 140 rooms and only 2 lives.

The problem: knowing whether a chapter is really learned

A student can recognize a lesson and still fail to use it. The only reliable check is to answer questions without help. In Maths Mystère, there are no hints and no shortcuts, so a door opens only when the student understands the notion.

Keep a pencil and a sheet of paper next to the phone. After each correct answer, a detailed correction appears so that the student can check the reasoning.

Inside the math mystery game

  • Seven floors and 140 rooms
  • Grade 6 (6ème) to Algebra 1 (3ème): fractions, relative numbers, proportionality, Pythagoras, Thalès, algebraic expressions, equations, volumes and statistics
  • Geometry (Seconde) to Precalculus (Terminale): vectors, quadratics, derivatives, sequences, dot product, conditional probability, logarithms, complex numbers, integrals and differential equations
  • A story, a hero, a setting, music and sound effects for each room
  • An explorer’s notebook: rooms opened floor by floor, an overall score, a gem to save a room as a favorite, a shortcut to the last room and a search by chapter name
  • A notification when new rooms appear

Because the Google account saves progress, it follows the player from one device to another.

Who it is for

For example, teachers can offer one room at the end of each unit. A parent can check in ten minutes whether a child has learned a chapter. A student can practice alone the evening before a test, then repeat the room later to confirm. The app works on phones and tablets, has no advertising, and comes in English and French.

The app needs an internet connection to load the rooms. The program follows the French curriculum, so the order of chapters may differ from a US course.

Entering your first room

  1. Install Maths Mystère on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Choose the floor that matches your grade.
  3. Pick a room by chapter name or browse the floor.
  4. Solve 10 riddles, noting each letter you earn.
  5. Type the secret word before you lose your 2 lives.

The setting makes a difference for teenagers. A room with a story, a hero and music feels less like a test than a worksheet would, yet the content is the same chapter content. Because the game has 140 rooms, a student can spread them over a whole school year. If the student takes one room after each unit, he or she ends the year with a clear list of solid chapters.

Where to revise first

If a door stays closed, read the chapter again on the Mathovore site, for example Grade 8 math, Algebra 1 or Geometry, then walk back into the room. Besides, repeating the room is a good way to see progress.
