Maths automatismes: math fluency practice, ten questions a day

Maths automatismes is an Android app for math fluency practice in middle school, from Grade 6 (6ème) to Algebra 1 (3ème). It asks one question at a time, with a timer and an immediate correction, and it covers 21 topics of the curriculum.

The aim is to make routine steps automatic, so that on test day the student keeps energy for the harder problems. The app is published by Mathovore and is available in English and French.

The problem: points lost on simple steps

In middle school, a lot of marks disappear on small things: a forgotten priority, a minus sign that vanishes, a unit conversion gone wrong. It is rarely a lack of understanding. It is a lack of reflexes, and reflexes come from short, regular repetition, not from a long session the night before.

Maths automatismes is built for exactly that routine. Ten questions a day add up to thousands of repetitions over a school year.

Three ways to do math fluency practice

  • Daily session: 10 varied questions drawn from the topics that need work
  • Topic training: choose one notion and keep going until it feels automatic
  • Mock test: 20 timed questions to practice test conditions, for example before the French brevet exam

Questions are made with random values, so memorizing answers is useless and the student learns the method. Formulas are displayed as in a textbook, and geometry questions come with a figure.

Missed questions come back later, then at longer intervals. This is spaced repetition, one of the most efficient memorization methods, and it turns today’s mistake into next week’s strength.

The 21 topics

The list covers mental math, order of operations, decimals, fractions, proportionality, percentages, unit conversions, relative numbers, powers, algebraic expressions, equations, angles, perimeters and areas, volumes, the Pythagorean theorem, Thalès, trigonometry, statistics, probability, graph reading and functions.

A mastery gauge shows each topic at a glance. Points, a streak flame, badges, four ranks (Apprenti, Calculateur, Expert and Maître) and a daily reminder help a student keep the habit.

Who it is for

Students in Grade 6 (6ème), Grade 7 (5ème), Grade 8 (4ème) and Algebra 1 (3ème) who want more speed and confidence. Students in Geometry (Seconde) who need to refresh the basics before a new course. Parents who want a short, useful activity without distractions. The app works offline and has no advertising.

Think of it as the warm-up before a sport. A basketball player does not only play matches; there are also shooting drills repeated every day. Math works the same way. A student who spends ten minutes on varied basics before homework starts the real problems with a clear head. The mastery gauge also tells a parent where to look first, without needing to read the whole curriculum.

Getting started in four steps

  1. Install the app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Start with the daily session of 10 questions.
  3. Open the mastery gauge and pick the weakest topic for a topic training.
  4. Take a mock test of 20 timed questions once a week.

For explanations behind each topic, the Mathovore math lessons and the Algebra 1 page cover the same ground in writing.
