Chrono Calcul, timed mental math on an athletics track

Chrono Calcul is an Android app for timed mental math that turns each school year into an athletics track. A child puts on a race bib and tries to beat personal records in a few minutes a day, from Grade 1 (CP) to Grade 7 (5ème).

There are 7 tracks and 74 events, listed in the order in which the notions are taught in class. The app comes from the Maths PDF site and works in English and French.

The problem: speed without stress

Many children freeze when a clock appears. Others are fast but careless. A sports theme helps with both: a stopwatch becomes an athlete’s tool and a mistake becomes part of the training. The goal is to beat your own record, not someone else’s.

Questions are generated at each game. A child cannot memorize answers, so every race measures real calculating.

Four ways to practice timed mental math

  • Training: 10 questions on one event, getting harder, to earn up to 3 stars
  • Against the clock: as many right answers as possible in 60 seconds
  • Survival: 3 lives, with difficulty rising
  • Race of the day: 15 questions, the same for all players that day

The events include complements to 10, doubles and halves, times tables, complements to 100 and 1,000, quotient and remainder, decimals, fractions, percentages, divisibility rules, order of operations, relative numbers, algebraic expressions, proportionality and rounding.

Understanding mistakes and staying motivated

After a wrong answer, the right result appears with an explanation of the method: go through the next ten, break a number apart, or lean on the times tables. A child learns a strategy, not only an answer.

There are 40 medals for the display case, 15 ranks from Graine de calcul to Légende du calcul mental, stars for each event, a trophy at the end of each track, personal records and a count of consecutive days.

Who it is for

Children in Grade 1 (CP) to Grade 7 (5ème) will find a track for their year. A big built-in number keypad and large buttons suit small hands, and the app reads well on phones and tablets. Parents in the US who follow the Common Core sequence will see familiar topics, although the order can differ slightly. The app has no advertising, and progress is saved on the Google account.

For a parent, the useful part is the routine. A few minutes before dinner, one event, one record to beat: that is easier to keep than a long weekly session. The consecutive-day counter and the medals make the habit visible, and the race of the day gives a reason to open the app daily, because it changes every morning and is the same for everyone.

Your first race

  1. Install Chrono Calcul on your Android device.
  2. Pick the track for your grade.
  3. Start a 10-question training on the first event.
  4. Read the method shown after any mistake.
  5. Try the 60-second mode and the race of the day.

To go over a topic away from the clock, the Mathovore pages for Grade 3 math and Grade 4 math explain the ideas behind the events.

Frequently asked questions

What is Chrono Calcul?

Chrono Calcul is an Android app for timed mental math with an athletics theme. It has 7 tracks and 74 events from Grade 1 (CP) to Grade 7 (5ème), available in English and French.

What are the four game modes?

Training with 10 questions and up to 3 stars, against the clock for 60 seconds, survival with 3 lives, and the race of the day with 15 questions identical for all players on that date.

Does the app explain mistakes?

Yes. After a wrong answer, the correct result is shown with a short explanation of the method, such as going through the next ten or breaking a number into parts.

Are the questions always the same?

No. Calculations are generated at each game, so a child cannot memorize answers and must actually compute. The race of the day is the exception: it is the same for every player that day.
